Fire Island National Seashore, Suffolk County, NY

Rhythmic waves, high dunes, ancient maritime forests, historic landmarks and glimpses of wildlife, Fire Island in Suffolk County, NY has been a special place for diverse plants, animals and people for centuries. Far from the pressure of nearby big-city life, dynamic barrier island beaches offer solitude, camaraderie, and spiritual renewal.

Marine Mammals at Fire Island

Nineteen species of marine mammals, including whales, porpoises, dolphins, and seals, have been recorded within the boundary of Fire Island National Seashore. A number of baleen whales may be found in New York State waters, including finback, minke, Sei, Humpback, and North Atlantic right whales.

Endangered Whale Species

The seashore is also home to three endangered species, the North Atlantic right whale, finback whales, and humpback whales. These whales spend the winter breeding and rearing calves in warmer, more southern waters. In late spring these animals migrate north to feed in colder, more nutrient rich waters teeming with krill – their primary food source. Whales are elusive creatures and are not easy to see off the coast of Fire Island but may be seen during spring, summer, or fall. The group of mammals that includes whales also includes dolphins and porpoises. Species such as harbor porpoises, common dolphins, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins can be spotted in offshore waters.

Seal Sightings on Fire Island

During the spring adult seals and pups recently weaned from their mothers can occasionally be seen resting on Fire Island’s beaches or swimming just offshore. Common seal species include Harbor seals, harp seals, grey seals, ringed seals, and hooded seals. These animals may come ashore to molt, get warm from the sun, avoid rough waters, or even just to rest after a long day of hunting fish.

Fishing at Fire Island National Seashore

Though some of the best fishing is during spring and fall, fisher folk over the age of 16 can enjoy casting a line anytime on Fire Island with a free, New York State recreational marine fishing registry. (New York State recreational saltwater fishing seasons, size and possession limits apply. Commercial fishing is not allowed within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore.

Surf-Fishing Access

Surf-fishing is an activity you can enjoy throughout the year on Fire Island. When ferry service is limited or the boating season is over, you may still drive to either end of the island for access to the beach. (Parking fee or recreational driving permit may be required.

Popular Fish Species and Fishing Locations

Striped bass, bluefish, and fluke are the most sought after species and there are plenty of places to fish. Fishing is allowed on private vessels; ocean beaches outside of designated lifeguarded areas; on the bay shoreline; and authorized docks and piers outside of NPS marinas, including Patchogue Headquarters, Patchogue Ferry Terminal, and Talisman Dock. However, fishing is not permitted on the Lighthouse Pier or on a vessel within 300 feet of the pier.
