Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip, Suffolk County, NY

The Cohalan, Court Complex in Central Islip, NY houses various divisions of the American justice system and offers services such as administration, a Criminal Court, the Suffolk County Traffic Division, oversees the issuance of parking tickets and also is home to the County Supreme Court and Family Courts. In addition is houses the administrative Judge’s Office and various Suffolk County agencies.

Given the wide range of services offered at this complex, it is one of the major hubs of the Justice System in the New York area. The complex, can be found on Carleton Avenue, Central Islip (north of the Southern State Parkway Service Road and the large white Federal Courthouse). This complex is a modern building that also serves an important educational function. It hosts students on tours of the various facilities and services and offers an insight to these visitors where they are exposed to just how the administration of justice occurs in the United States.

The insights gained by participants in these tours are valuable in that they expose them to the most modern ways that court cases are handled and also how the various court employees (such as defense attorneys, the prosecutor, judges in the many types of courts, jurors, the Court Clerk and assorted Court Officers) work together to ensure that justice is applied in keeping with the American Constitution (it also includes insights into the Arraignment part of the process which is an important part of the expression of sixth amendment rights).

The tour also offers insights into how those who enter the criminal justice system are processed and the various steps in this process. Included in the tour is a visit to the Sheriff’s lockup and the cells.
