Robert Moses State Park, Suffolk County, NY

Robert Moses State Park is a 875-acre state park in the county of Suffolk County, New York. The park is located on the western end of Fire Island, one of the central barrier islands off the southern coast of Long Island, and is known for its five-mile stretch of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. The park is accessible from Long Island by the Robert Moses Causeway across Great South Bay.

Established as Fire Island State Park in 1908, the park is the oldest state park on Long Island. Its current name was given to honor Robert Moses, the influential mid-20th century urban planner and former president of the Long Island State Park Commission. Recently, some have suggested the park should revert to its previous name or to something that better reflects its location.

Robert Moses State Park is located partly on the mainland and partly on Barnhart Island. Visitors reach the park through a tunnel under the Eisenhower Lock (tunnel height is 13’6″). The park is spacious, home to a large variety of flora and fauna. The nature center also offers holiday, special events and school outreach programs. The park’s nature, hiking and cross-country skiing trails wind through fields, forests and wetlands, with overlooks showcasing spectacular views. In winter, the park also welcomes snowmobilers

Robert Moses State Park is located on the St. Lawrence River. This park is NOT located on Long Island. Considered a flagship facility, this park offers a multitude of recreational opportunities, camping, a marina and boat launch, some of the best fishing in the Northeast, picnic areas, a swimming beach, tennis courts and a year round nature center. The nature center also offers holiday, special events and school outreach programs. The park’s nature, hiking and cross-country skiing trails wind through fields, forests and wetlands, with overlooks showcasing spectacular views. In winter, the park also welcomes snowmobilers.

Most park facilities are accessible to disabled visitors. The park has a beach, trails, a marina, a picnic area with a playground, and nature center, and restrooms with showers. Boat launch and boat rentals are available. Gas stations and major shopping centers are within five miles, as are a power dam and Eisenhower Lock. The Thousand Islands region is about an hour and a half away from the park.
